China. This is such a pretty rose bred in France in 1902. The almost single blooms are shades of soft orange and pink highlighted with red. And oh the perfume. Flowers from summer to autumn. Lovely. Assume named after Zoe Talon AKA Comtesse du Cayla and mistress of Louis XVIII.

Damask. An enchanting old rose that became known around 1848 but is certainly older than that. The fully double purple blooms have an exquisite fragrance. The new foliage has a bronze tinge to it that contrasts nicely with the bright green, more mature leaves.

Gallica. Fully double pale pink blooms that carry a pleasant fragrance appear throughout summer. Dark grey-green foliage and an upright habit. Quite a vigorous grower that will tolerate poor soils and some shade. France 1829.

Centifolia. A chance seedling classed as a Centifolia but some say it is a modern hybrid. No matter the heritage it is a truly beautiful rose with pink quartered blooms that have a strong sweet fragrance. The blooms appear in large clusters for a long period but do not repeat thereafter. C1940.

Hybrid Perpetual. This rose would have to be one of the nicest striped varieties with semi-double blooms of pink and crimson. The blooms appear from mid-summer through to autumn and are nicely fragrant. Light green foliage, vigorous and upright. France 1921.

Hybrid Musk, Shrub. Medium, semi-double, apricot blooms in large clusters with an open bloom form. Mild, tea fragrance. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Bred by Rev. Joseph Hardwick Pemberton (UK, 1922). Very disease resistant.

Rugosa. A robust Rugosa with large, heavy petalled, double, purplish-red flowers with mauve highlights. Beautiful strong clove fragrance. This rose has beautiful red hips that form after the flowers have finished in late summer-autumn. Vigorous, hardy and easy to grow. From the Netherlands. 1905.

Bourbon. The heritage of this rose is unknown but general consensus by rose lovers is that it is one of the nicest striped roses to be found. Delicate shades of lilac and purple on a large cupped blooms complemented by lush foliage. Few thorns, plenty of blooms and a delicious fragrance. Lovely.

This rose can be trained successfully as a small climber.

Gallica Ciolacea. Stunning near single flowers of a rich velvety crimson purple with stunning yellow stamen contrast. This healthy, upright bush with lush foliage, is said to have originated in Holland around 1700's. Deciduous.

This once only flowering rose should only be pruned after flowering to ensure the next seasons flowers.
